School of Advanced Studies in the Reappraisal of the Surplus Approach
Rome, 13-18 January 2025

The Centro Ricerche e Documentazione “Piero Sraffa”, in collaboration with the Department of Economics of Roma Tre University, organizes a one week School open to PhD students and young scholars with an interest in the modern revival of Classical theory.

Objective of the School
The School’s purpose is to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the surplus approach as taken up and developed by Piero Sraffa and subsequent authors. Participants will therefore be introduced to the analyses of the Classical economists and to the modern research conducted within the reappraisal of their theoretical framework. The activity will embrace different topics, ranging from the theory of value and distribution to the study of economic growth, also dealing with applied analyses and policy issues. In addition, the School aims to stimulate participants into developing their own research by fostering contacts and scientific exchange between young researchers and expert scholars.

Organizing Committee
Roberto Ciccone, Saverio M. Fratini, E. Sergio Levrero, Antonella Palumbo, Daria Pignalosa, Davide Romaniello, Antonella Stirati, Paolo Trabucchi, Attilio Trezzini.

Application
The School welcomes applications by PhD students at any stage of their PhD as well as post-doc researchers. Candidatures by undergraduate and Master students will be considered only if their profile is exceptionally strong.
If you would like to attend the School, please fill in the application form and send it to cswinterschool2025@gmail.com together with a curriculum vitae by 25 October 2024. Applications received after this date will be taken into consideration, but the applicants will not be considered as candidates for possibly receiving financial support. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 5 November 2024. The registration fee is 130€ and includes teaching materials, coffee breaks and lunches.

Financial support
Centro Sraffa, with the contribution of the Bank of Italy, grants financial support for a limited number of participants, who will be awarded a contribution to travel and/or staying expenses. As specified in the application form, applicants for financial support are requested to send in a separate file the indication of whether they apply for contribution to travel and/or accommodation expenses, as well as the country(ies) of their return travel, together with a brief description (300-500 words) of their research. If wished, a reference letter can be attached.

Notice is hereby given that participants in the School may also apply for financial contribution from Young Scholar Initiative of INET (Institute for New Economic Thinking), according to modalities to be announced by YSI through their own communication channels.

Accommodation
A limited number of rooms are available, at special prices for the students of the School, at Villa Benedetta (www.villabenedetta.it). First-come first-served policy applies. Rates per night are €56 to 61 (single room) and €102 to 107 (double room, to be shared with another School’s participant), breakfast and city taxes included.

Organization of the School
A) Teaching activity
The teaching activity is organized at two intertwined levels: lectures designed for a post graduated audience will be accompanied by seminars at a more advanced level on topics that may suggest research subjects for young scholars.
The lectures will introduce participants to the foundations of the main lines of research within the modern revival of Classical theory and are organized in four modules:
• CLASSICAL THEORY AND MARGINALIST (OR NEOCLASSICAL) THEORY: THEIR DIFFERENT ANALYTICAL STRUCTURES (INTRODUCTORY MODULE);
• THE CRITIQUE OF NEOCLASSICAL THEORY (MODULE A);
• THE SURPLUS APPROACH TO VALUE AND DISTRIBUTION (MODULE B);
• THE CLASSICAL-KEYNESIAN APPROACH TO OUTPUT DETERMINATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH (MODULE C).

B) Interactive sessions
Participants will be involved in interactive student-teacher sessions devoted to deepening and discussing topics covered in the lectures.

C) Poster session
The poster session will consist of the exhibition and discussion of panels prepared by the participants, describing their ongoing research activities. As specified in the application form, those who wish to participate in the Poster Session should send in a separate file a brief description of their research.

A provisional programme of the activities and the list of lecturers will be provided as soon as possible. Information about the previous editions of the School can be found on the Centro Sraffa website (http://www.centrosraffa.org/pastevents.aspx and
