INVITED SPEAKERS

Dr Flavio Comim  [BSc, MSc (USP, Brazil), MPhil and PhD (Cantab)] is the Dean of the IQS School of Management, University Ramon Llull in Barcelona and an affiliated lecturer at Land Economy at the University of Cambridge, UK.

He was senior economist for UNDP Brazil during 2008/2010 when he coordinated Brazil’s Human Development Report on ‘Human Values’. After that he coordinated Panama’s 2014 Human Development Report on ‘Childhood and the Youth’.

He has also been a consultant for many international organisations such as UNEP, UNESCO, FAO, WHO, UNDP and ILO, carrying out fieldwork in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America. In Cambridge, he is also a research associate of the Von Hugel Institute at St Edmund’s College. He has been a Coordinating Leading Author of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and has contributed to the Global Environmental Outlook 4.

He has published widely in areas such as history of economic thought, economic methodology, development ethics, ecological economics and the capability approach. Among his publications, it could be mentioned the co-edited books Children and the Capability Approach (2011) with Mario Biggeri and Jerome Ballet, Capabilities, Gender, Equality with Martha Nussbaum (2014) and New Frontiers of the Capability Approach (2018) with Shailaja Fennell and PB Anand.

He has published in journals such as the Cambridge Journal of Economics, Ecological Economics, Ecological Indicators, China Economic Review, Social Indicators Research, Review of Social Economy, Journal of International Development, Journal of Economic Methodology, History of Political Economy, Structural Change and Economic Dynamics and Development among others.

The title of his keynote speech is “Why inequalities grow? Exploring paths to a sustainable future“.

Elsa Fornero (full cv here) is Honorary Professor of Economics at the University of Turin, Scientific Coordinator of CeRP – Center for Research on Pensions and Welfare Policies, the first center devoted to research on pensions in Italy, which she started in 1999.
She is currently a Member of the Board of Directors of Cintia (Centro interuniversitario Netspar Italy); Honorary Fellow of Collegio Carlo Alberto; Research Fellow of Netspar – Network for Studies on Pensions, Aging and Retirement; Vice-President of the Observatoire de l’Epargne Europèenne; a Member of the Advisory Group New Pact for Europe (Brussels); a Member of the Research Committee of the OECD International Network on financial Education (INFE); Policy Fellow, Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), Bonn.

She is the author of many publications about public and private pension systems, pension reforms, population aging, household saving, retiring choices and life insurance. She has been an op-ed writer for the Italian economic daily Il Sole-24 ore. On behalf of the World Bank, in the early 2000s, she assessed the pension systems of Russia, Latvia, Macedonia and Albania.

From September to November 2015 she was visiting fellow at the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis (SCEPA), New School for Social Research, New York. She served as Minister of Labor, Social Policies and Equal Opportunities in Italy’s “technocratic” government (16 Nov. 2011- 28 April 2013) and in this capacity conceived and drafted the pension reform and labor market reform (approved by Parliament at the end of 2011 and mid 2012 respectively) that, by altering the medium and long term structure of Italian public finance and labor market, were fundamental to the subsequent lifting of the EU excessive deficit procedure against Italy and to a process of long term rebalancing of economic relationships between generations, from the middle aged to the younger ones.

Annalisa Rosselli (full cv here) is Senior professor (Docens Turris Virgatae) at the University of Rome Tor Vergata where she was full professor of History of Political Economy from 2000 to 2020. She currently teaches History of Economic Thought and Policy at LUISS “Guido Carli” University. Since 2018 she has been a member of the Accademia dei Lincei.

Her main research interests in the field of the history of political economy are the history and theory of money, Classical Political Economy, Cambridge economists from Marshall to the post-war period, and the origins of the theory of financial speculation. On these and other topics she has published papers in the main national and international journals in the field, as well as having written or edited several volumes published with internationally renowned publishing houses (publications here).

She was President of the Italian Economic Society (SIE) from 2016 to 2019; President of STOREP (Italian Association for the History of Political Economy) from 2010 to 2012, Vice-President of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought (ESHET) from 2005 to 2008 and then President from 2012 to 2014. In addition to the usual activities as invited speaker, visiting professor, member of the editorial board of journals, participation in evaluation committees, she has long been involved in the education of young people with various initiatives, especially as a member of the scientific committee of the International Summer School in History of economic thought and economic philosophy. For many years, she has also been working on the economic aspects of gender equality and, as an expert on gender budgeting, she has been involved in numerous national and European projects.
